Return to DOGS
1981 - 1994
This is Poppy (named Papagena by Kris after a character in Mozart's "The Magic Flute"), full name: Papagena von Paws und Jaws. She lived with Kris before I did, but she did not have a jealous bone in her body. Poppy took life seriously and always had a purpose. The weight of the world seemed to be on her shoulders.
Poppy was from show stock and coulda been a contenda like her litter mates, but she was returned by her previous owner to the breeder because she limped. It turned out to be a puppy growth phase, not hip dysplasia.
She was given to Kris for the cost of vet bills on the condition that she be bred. But it was soon found (after she tore up several articles of furniture trying to "nest") that she could not have puppies, so was given up by the breeder to Kris.
Poppy spent many years with her companion dog, Sarastro (also named after a character in "The Magic Flute") a black and tan male doberman, who was another loving soul who preceeded her in death. She used to howl with Sarastro, but after he was gone she was silent for several months. Kris started a voice class after she began square dance calling. Poppy soon began to howl and sing along during Kris' vocal exercises.
